Obituary for John A. "Jack" Sweeney, Jr.

John A. (Jack) Sweeney, Jr., age 81, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2018 in Oxford, Pennsylvania.

Jack was born on August 18th, 1936 to the late John A. Sr. and Mary E. Sweeney in Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated from the Perkiomen School in Pennsburg, PA where he proved to be a natural athlete. He excelled in both Basketball, setting new school records, and Track, earning medals in the Penn Relays. He then graduated from La Salle University in Philadelphia.

His career as an educator began at Springer Elementary and continued at John Dickinson High School. In addition to teaching, Jack enjoyed a coaching career in both Basketball and Golf.

Jack remained an avid sports fan throughout his life and loved analyzing football and basketball games with family and friends, but primary was his lifetime passion for the game of golf. He was a regular at numerous Delaware courses making lifelong friends of many that shared his love of the game. Jack was most proud in his role as coach to his son, Patrick, teaching him the game’s finer points and sharing many golf adventures together.
The study of American History was a constant in Jack’s life. While he had no interest in fiction, he devoured books about the American Revolution, the Civil War and autobiographies of historical figures.

Well known for his navigational skills and keen sense of direction, Jack loved to review the details found in local roadway maps and jump behind the wheel - spending an afternoon along back roads discovering original highways, new shortcuts and local landmarks. After moving to Oxford, PA to be closer to his son’s family, his renewed interest provided many happy hours on those more quiet country roads.

He was also very proud to be a founding member of the Henry Clay Historical Society.
Jack will be deeply missed by his son, Patrick, his daughter-in-law, Dawn and his beloved grandson and best buddy, Hunter.

He is also survived by his sister, Sheila Sweeney Wozniak, his nephew, John Wozniak III and wife Julie, his niece, Ellen Wozniak Pierce and husband Greg as well as his great-niece, Lauren Pierce and great-nephew, Christopher Pierce and all of his lifelong friends.
Jack’s memorial mass will be celebrated Monday, May 14, 2018 at 11am at St. John the Beloved 907 Milltown Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:45am.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack’s name may be made to either Wilmington Veterans Hospital Patient Fund 1601 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19805 or to The Delaware SPCA 455 Stanton Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713 (delspca.org).
